Can You Take CBD and CBG Together?

Yes. CBD and CBG are both non-intoxicating hemp cannabinoids, they already occur together in every full-spectrum extract, and there is no known safety reason to keep them apart. What nobody can yet claim is that the pair works better than either alone: no human trial has tested the combination. This post builds on the CBG vs CBD comparison and answers the practical questions.

What is CBG, and how is it different from CBD?

CBG (cannabigerol) is the cannabinoid the hemp plant makes first. Its acidic form, CBGA, is the raw material the plant converts into CBDA, THCA and CBCA as it matures, which is why CBG is often called the “mother cannabinoid” and why mature hemp usually contains less than 1 percent of it. CBD, by contrast, is the dominant cannabinoid in hemp bred for extraction and can make up 10 percent or more of the dried flower.

The two molecules also reach the body through different doors. CBG binds weakly to the CB1 and CB2 receptors and interacts with alpha-2 adrenergic and serotonin 5-HT1A receptors in laboratory studies. CBD barely touches CB1 and CB2 and works instead through 5-HT1A, TRPV1 and the enzymes that recycle the body’s own cannabinoids. Neither produces a high. The full breakdown is in Endoca’s guide to what CBG is.

Is it safe to take CBD and CBG at the same time?

Based on what has been published, yes. The World Health Organization’s 2018 review concluded that CBD is generally well tolerated and shows no potential for abuse or dependence. CBG has far less data behind it, but the first placebo-controlled human trial, published in Scientific Reports in 2024, gave 34 healthy adults a 20 mg CBG tincture and found no measurable impairment: intoxication ratings stayed under 2 on a 10-point scale, and scores on a standard impairment test stayed well below the threshold that matters for driving.

There is one sensible caution. Both cannabinoids are processed by the liver’s cytochrome P450 enzymes, the same system that handles many prescription medicines. If you take medication with a grapefruit warning, ask a pharmacist before adding CBD, CBG or both.

Do CBD and CBG work better together?

Nobody knows yet. The idea that cannabinoids and terpenes reinforce each other, the entourage effect, was set out in a 2011 review by Ethan Russo and is plausible, but it remains a hypothesis. Laboratory work has looked at CBD and CBG side by side in cell and animal models; no clinical trial has compared the combination with either compound alone in people.

What the evidence does support is each cannabinoid on its own. In the 2024 CBG trial, anxiety ratings fell by 26.5 percent after CBG against 22.5 percent after placebo, stress ratings were lower 20 minutes after the dose, and participants recalled slightly more words on a verbal memory test. Those are modest, single-dose findings in healthy people, and the authors said so. Taking the two together is a reasonable thing to try; expecting a multiplied effect is not.

How do people combine CBD and CBG in practice?

  • Use a full-spectrum oil. This is the simplest route, because the CBG is already in the bottle. Endoca’s oils list CBD, CBC, CBG and CBN on the label, with the exact milligrams on each batch’s certificate of analysis.
  • Add a dedicated CBG product to your CBD routine. This suits people who want more CBG than a full-spectrum oil delivers. Take them at the same time or hours apart; nothing in the research says timing matters.
  • Choose a ratio product. Some brands sell 1:1 CBD to CBG oils. Treat the total cannabinoid figure, not just the CBD figure, as your dose.

Whichever route you take, count everything. A 30 mg CBD dose plus a 20 mg CBG dose is 50 mg of cannabinoids, and it is the total that your liver processes. Start at the lower end of the label, hold the dose for a week, and adjust from there.

Should you take CBD and CBG in the morning or at night?

There is no research on timing. Because CBG showed no drowsiness in the 2024 trial, many people use it during the day and keep CBD for the evening, but that is habit rather than evidence. Pick a routine you can keep for a couple of weeks, note how you feel, and change one thing at a time.

Frequently asked questions

Does CBG get you high?

No. CBG does not activate the CB1 receptor the way THC does. In the 2024 placebo-controlled trial, a 20 mg dose produced intoxication ratings under 2 out of 10 and impairment scores well below the threshold used for driving, which matched placebo.

Does full-spectrum CBD oil already contain CBG?

Yes, in small amounts. Hemp typically carries under 1 percent CBG, so a full-spectrum oil delivers a few milligrams of CBG for every hundred milligrams of CBD. The exact figure is on the certificate of analysis for the batch, which is the only reliable way to know.

Can you take CBD, CBG and CBN together?

The same logic applies. All three are non-intoxicating, all three appear together in full-spectrum extracts, and none has been shown to interfere with the others. Count the combined milligrams as your dose and check with a pharmacist if you take prescription medicines.

Will taking CBG with CBD show up on a drug test?

Standard workplace tests look for THC metabolites, not CBD or CBG. The risk comes from trace THC in full-spectrum products, which can accumulate with heavy daily use. If testing is a concern, choose isolate-based or THC-free products and keep the certificate of analysis.
